Stone mason in Peyresq (04170)

Peyresq is not a commune: it is an outlying hamlet of Thorame-Haute, perched at 1,528 metres on a rocky spur above the upper Vaïre. Abandoned, then raised again stone by stone from 1954. It is the local benchmark for standards, and everyone here knows it.

The local fabric

The fabric is roughly squared rubble masonry, quarried as close to the site as possible: Annot sandstone from the spur and from fallen blocks, limestone or sandy limestone from the cliff above the hamlet, laid in irregular courses in lime and sand mortar. Dressed stone is kept for quoins and surrounds.

Original roofs are larch shingle, with sandstone slabs on some parts — the church apse was redone in 1920 with slabs from the Grand Coyer quarry. Across the commune, shingle has given way to sheet metal and then steel decking; Peyresq is the exception. The church of Saint-Pons has been a listed monument since 1971, and its structure is squared sandstone rubble laid in regular courses.

What we do there

  • Rubble masonry restoration, respecting what was done here before us.
  • Repointing and lime renders.
  • Retaining walls and access works on spur ground.
  • Difficult-access sites: the D32 is narrow and the hamlet is pedestrian.
