Stone mason in Beauvezer (04370)

Beauvezer is further out — forty-five minutes — but it is our stone. The village backs onto the same massif as Méailles, the Grand Coyer, and it is built of the same Annot sandstone.

The local fabric

Here it is sandstone and almost nothing else: raw or barely squared rubble bedded in lime and sand mortar, with sandstone quoins as well. A striking fact recorded by the inventory — limestone and river cobble are absent from the walls even though the Verdon runs at the foot of the village. They took the stone from above, not from the riverbed.

The houses are tall and narrow, terraced, four to five storeys, with cellars and ground floors often barrel-vaulted and masonry outside stairs spilling into streets two metres wide. Most of the village is an eighteenth-century rebuild, after the fire of 1728. The thing to know: tile was replaced with sheet metal on very nearly the whole village in the early twentieth century.

What we do there

  • Restoration of tall sandstone houses, accessed through two-metre streets.
  • Barrel vaults and masonry outside stairs.
  • Repointing and flush-struck lime renders.
  • Roofs and timber frames, returning to a coherent covering.
