Stone mason in Annot (04240)

Annot is where the business comes from, and it is also the village that gave the stone its name: grès d'Annot. Working here means working at home — in front of people who will see the result every day.

The local fabric

Sandstone is everywhere, whatever the building period, but it is only ever used as rubble: the heritage inventory records no ashlar house in the village. Dressed stone is kept for the corner quoins, found on more than two thirds of the houses, and for outside stair treads. It did not come from organised quarries but from outcrops and fallen blocks on the slopes — some rocks against the houses still carry their putlog holes.

The rubble is laid in lime and sand mortar, the lime having been burnt locally from the limestone on the east side of the commune. Gypsum plays a real technical part here: window surrounds finished in smoothed plaster mortar, interior plaster renders. The local signature is the carved door lintel, with jambs ending in sculpted corbels. Original roofs are canal tile on a masonry génoise, still in place on three quarters of the old village.

What we do there

  • Façade repair and lime repointing, flush-struck, without touching the face of the stone.
  • Restoration of old sandstone buildings, by hand, in lanes no machine can enter.
  • Génoises and masonry eaves, rebuilt as they were.
  • Retaining walls, earthworks and structural masonry.
